the existing canon of the forgotten realms is muddled through myriad official campaign-books, novels, licensed video games, and more that at times contradict themselves or earlier precedents set. this leaves many factors of the world-- including timeline, notable religions, holidays, and more-- in the hands of dungeon masters to flesh out the world their game is in; everyone's experience of the forgotten realms, for this reason, is a bit different. this, alongside the way individual characters in our own narratives may then impact the geopolitics of faerun and the greater realms (as we must remember, a level twenty adventurer is near-demigod in power, and there are certainly ways to surpass one's own human limitations even then), has lead us to want to compile all the relevant world-building tidbits we use with our characters in one place for your reference!for our purposes, the forgotten realms-- chiefly toril, but also parts of the shadowfell, feywilds, and astral sea-- are used as a template; certain aspects of different cultures, playable races, religions, cults, and more have been changed, fleshed out more, or added from scratch, and events may be altered or rewritten as needed for our own narratives. we are not experts on the lore of the forgotten realms, as much as i know i would love to be, but it isn't realistic for either of us with our jobs, other hobbies, and everything else in our lives to memorize every detail of a fictional world-- we are real world anthropologists who are doing real world research as well-- and the faerun wiki is free and great.
TIMEKEEPING, CALENDARS, & HOLIDAYS
COUNTING TIME
The universally accepted method of keeping time across the forgotten realms is Dale Reckoning, often abbreviated DR. However, many cultures or states may use their own timekeeping that is less universally accepted; for example, waterdeep and places north of it oft use Northreckoning.THE YEAR IN THE FORGOTTEN REALMS
The Dale Reckoning year is marked by the Calendar of Harptos, created by the wizard Harptos and dividing the year into twelve months. Each month contains three tendays, for a total of thirty days each month. Five days fall between months, and every four years is the holiday of Shieldmeet just past midsummer. Days of the tenday do not have names themselves, and dates are written with the number followed by the month, such as 1st of Hammer. The months, and days outside of them, are as follows:
Hammer, "Deepwinter"
Midwinter (between Hammer 30 and Alturiak 1)
Alturiak, "The Claw of Winter"
Ches, "The Claw of Sunsets"
Tarsakh, "The Claw of Storms"
Greengrass (between Tarsakh 30 and Mirtul 1)
Mirtul, "The Melting"
Kythorn, "The Time of Flowers"
Flamerule, "Summertide"
Midsummer (between Flamerule 30 and Eleasis 1)
Shieldmeet (day after Midsummer, once every four years)
Eleasis, "Highsun"
Eleint, "The Fading"
Autumn Equinox on Eleint 21
Highharvestide (between Eleint 30 and Marpenoth 1)
Marpenoth, "Leaffall"
Uktar, "The Rotting"
Feast of the Moon (between Uktar 30 and Nightal 1)
Nightal, "The Drawing Down"
TIMELINE OF TORIL
THE AGE BEFORE AGES
In the time long before life-- before a world-- as one knows it now, the gods, primordials, and other forces still existed. Before Toril, there was the prehistoric dual-planet of Abier-Toril. For untold millennia, the Dawn War raged above the heads of what little and unintelligent life existed.THE BLUE AGE
Before life walked the earth, it existed in a great spanning sea. This was known as the Blue Age. Such flourishing undersea life largely met a harrowing fate, dying from lack of warmth and light as the ages changed. It ended as Dendar the Night Serpent ate the sun.THE SHADOW EPOCH
The years following Dendar eating the sun see life on Abier-Toril dwindle; with little life left to fight over, the conflict between the gods and the primordials lulls, appearing to be an eternal stalemate. A traitor-- the primordial Ubato-- turns the tides of the war and the gods turn triumphant.THE DAYS OF THUNDER : -35,000 DR to -30,000 DR
Upon Abier-Toril, a new sun allowed life to blossom once more; abominations and abberations ruled supreme, though in its cradle of life, so did the creator races and the small, wet monkey that would eventually become humanity.THE TIME OF THE SARRUKH : −35,000 DR to −33,500 DR
This period of history was marked by the rise in power of the sarrukh race, which saw a series of successful empires at this time.ca. −34,800 DR : The sarrukh empire of Mhairshaulk was founded on the Chultan Peninsula.ca. −34,500 DR : The sarrukh empire of Isstosseffifil was founded in the lands that would become Anauroch.ca. −34,100 DR : Okoth fell after a century of civil unrest that caused many sarrukh to travel into the planes.ca. −34,000 DR : The sarrukh founded the Ba'etith.ca. −33,500 DR : The Sarrukh empire of Mhairshaulk began its decline. The nation became the preserve of the yuan-ti.THE TIME OF THE BATRACHI : −33,500 DR to −31,000 DR
The batriachi were traditionally an aquatic race of frog-like people. When they ventured on land, they usurped the nations of the sarrukh.ca. −33,500 DR : The Batriachi empire rose to power.ca. −31,500 DR : Their golden age ended abruptly when Zhoukoudien, the High One, was killed in battle by Omo, a titan thane of the Jotunbrud Tribes.ca. −31,000 DR : THE TEARFALL
The batrachi were losing a war against the titans and desperately enacted a great summoning ritual that unleashed several once-imprisoned primordials. The gods swiftly opposed the primordials. The primordial Asgorath, the World Shaper, even hurled an ice moon or comet at the planet, in order to destroy what she could not have, in an event called the Tearfall.Disastrous earthquakes, fires, and windstorms swept across all of Abeir-Toril, erasing whole continents and rearranging the seas, causing the four Inner Seas to merge into the Sea of Fallen Stars. But, before the world was destroyed, Ao split it into two twin worlds: Abeir for the primordials and Toril for the gods. This time also sees the first dragon eggs of Toril hatching en masse.THE TIME OF THE AEAREE : −31,000 DR to −30,000 DR
The climate rapidly changed, and the batriachi could not keep up. This led to a mass exodus to the realm of Limbo, clearing the way for the avian creator race of the aearee to rise.ca. −30,700 DR : a number of lammasu defeated a much larger force of Aearee-Krocaa, killing one thousand. The aearee later experimented on domesticated landwyrms to create winged wyrms, or wyverns. Supported by wyvern forces, the Aearee-Krocaa empire commenced a rapid expansion.[6]ca. −30,400 DR : the gnolls of Urgnarash battled the aearee of Kookrui-Shara. Gnoll shamans, following Yeenoghu, summoned marrashi to spread disease among the aearee. Aearee crops were blighted, and the aearee suffered the Wasting Plague. The Aearee-Quor were decimated, and many of them began worshiping the demon lord Pazrael to seek salvation.THE DAWN AGE : -30,000 DR to -24,000 DR
Also known as the Time of Dragons or the Time of Giants; it was a time of constant war for land across Faerûn.ca. −30,000 DR : The age begins when dragons launched devastating attacks against the dominant Aearee Empires throughout the land, air, and underground, creating the first flight of dragons, destroying those nations completely. They also battled against giants over territory, forcing giantkind to yield their lands and flee to the north. Individual dragons and dragon clans came to rule large swaths of territory and battled with their rivals not only for dominion of those lands, but also over matters of religious nature as the dragons of this age were devout followers of the Draconic pantheon. Those wars, known as the Draco Holy Wars, led the race to near extinction.THE FIRST FLOWERING : -24,000 DR to -12,000 DRca. −24,000 DR : Yuan-ti ruled Mhairshaulk has all but collapsed, thanks to repeated assaults on its cities by the great wyrms of the south.Called into service by the god Ubtao, an army of winged serpents known as couatls arrive in the Jungles of Chult from an unknown continent to the west. For centuries the couatl and the yuan-ti battle each other for control of the Chultan Peninsula. Time and again the yuan-ti are forced to concede their westernmost holdings to the couatl, until the war ends in a stalemate with the Hazur Mountains as the dividing line.END OF THE TIME OF DRAGONS
Following the first Rage of Dragons, the surviving elves establish the Dracorage Mythal in the far north of Faerûn to prevent the dragons from again taking control of Faerûn and enslaving the other races.−23,900 DR : The forest community of Sharlarion survived the First Sundering nearly intact. As the elves multiplied, they migrated into neighboring forests, hills, and lowland regions. Soon the gold elf kingdom of Aryvandaar, in the present day High Forest is established.−23,600 DR : Establishment of the first settlements of the gold elf and silver elf kingdom of Shantel Othreier in the Green Fields. An outpost of Shantel Othreier is established in the Ardeep Forest by the moon elves.−23,200 DR : Establishment of the first settlements of Ilythiir in the Shaar and Forest of Amtar.−23,100 DR : Establishment of the settlements of Syòrpiir in what will become the Ankhwood and Chondalwood.−22,900 DR : First settlements of the kingdom of Illefarn are founded in Ardeep and Kryptgarden Forests, and parts of the Dessarin valley. Hundreds of High Magi gathered in the heartland of Faerûn at the Gathering Place. Ignoring the lesson learned from the destruction of Tintageer centuries earlier, the High Magi cast a spell designed to create a glorious elven homeland. As the Day of Birthing dawned, the spell reached its apex. The unbridled force of the spell sundered Faerûn, the one land, apart. As a result, hundreds of cities were washed away, thousands of elves lay dead, and the face of Abeir-Toril was changed forever. The name Faerûn, no longer the one land, was given to largest continent and Evermeet, Island of Elves, was created. The Tree of Souls is given to the elves.−17,500 DR : The independent sylvan realms of Thearnytaar, Eiellûr, and Syòrpiir open discussions of unifying the elves of the Satyrwood.THE WAR OF THREE LEAVES BEGINS
−17,100 DR : The unification of the Satyrwood is thwarted by dark elven Ilythiiri spies and assassins, killing their leaders and framing opposing heirs, driving the three realms to a multi-front war. Ilythiir's influence is not discovered for centuries.−16,900 DR : Numerous elves abandon the surface realms of Eiellûr and Syòrpiir during the War of Three Leaves to settle in the Selmal Basin (Vilhon Reach). This begins the elven migrations, which continue for seven millennia.−16,800 DR : Thearnytaar, Eiellûr, and Syòrpiir remain separate realms after peace is restored, though each of the three continue skirmishes among themselves and with Ilythiir for centuries.THE WAR OF THREE LEAVES ENDS−15,300 DR : The Vyshaan clan rises to power in Aryvandaar under Coronal Ivósaar Vyshaan.−14,700 DR : Aryvandaar's rulers begin attempts to diplomatically and peacefully annex Miyeritar into their realm and under their control.ca. -14,000 DR : Tribal barbarian clans of humans, known as the Talfir, roam Keltormir, hiding and hunting in the great forests and avoiding the greater races of elves, giants, and dragons.THE SECOND EPOCH: THE TIME OF THE ELVES
The Second Epoch of Serôs officially begins with the building of the undersea capital of Aryselmalyr, and ends with forty years of war between the sea elves and other undersea races. It is also during this Epoch that the first land-dwellers began exploration of the waters, the initial migrations of shalarin into the Inner Sea, and the trapping of the sahuagin behind the Sharksbane Wall.−13,900 DR : Miyeritar becomes the center for elven Art and High Magic on Faerûn.−13,200 DR : Skirmishing and trade interference starts between Aryvandaar and Miyeritar.THE CROWN WARS : -12,000 DR to -9,000 DR
The Crown Wars were a series of elven wars spanning a period of 3,000 years. The great elven civilizations participated in five primary conflicts, leading to the decline of elven power in Faerûn. Some of the Crown Wars overlap each other. The Crown Wars are considered, amongst most elves, to be possibly the most shameful series of events in elven history. While any elf could find more information about this period of time, an elf will not willingly share information about this period of time with a non-elf. Sun elf communities, especially, will be reluctant to even discuss the existence of the Crown Wars and will discourage any research of this period of time.THE FIRST CROWN WAR : −12,000 DR to −11,300 DR−12,000 DR : The Crown Wars Begin/Rise Of The Vyshaantar Empire. After centuries of fruitless diplomacy, the impatient, grasping rulers of Aryvandaar attack Miyeritar and begins putting political pressure on Shantel Othreier to join them or suffer the same fate. The first dwarven settlements appear in the great mountain range known as the Yehimal, which lies at the juncture of the three great continents of Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara. From there, the earliest dwarves migrated into all three lands. From the great migration, one isolated branch of dwarves settle amid the isolated peaks of the Novularond, eventually becoming known as the arctic dwarves. The first great kingdom of the dwarves of Faerûn is centred in the great cavern of Bhaerynden, deep beneath the Shaar.−11,800 DR : Miyeritar militarily occupied and annexed by Aryvandaar, though a number of clans and strongholds resist and continue to fight. Many elves of Illefarn, despite its officially-neutral stance, provide secret safe-havens for Miyeritaran refugees.THE SECOND CROWN WAR : −11,700 DR to −11,000 DRc.−11,700 DR : Dragons set the southern expanse of Shantel Othreier aflame, separating the soon-to-be-called Wyrmwood from its greater body. Tethir, (soon to be called "the Dragonslayer"), kin of Keltormir, single-handedly slays two ancient red wyrms of the Ridge and saves many elves of both his own Keltormir (allied with the northern elves) and Shantel Othreier. Tethir's stand earned the elves the respect of the dragons, who had previously dismissed them as ignorant, two-footed cattle. Over time, humanity slowly builds in the clearings created by the dragon fires. The Second Crown War. Ilythiir rises up and viciously strikes out at any who support the gold elves of the north, in answer to the aggressions of Aryvandaar. Its nearest neighbor of Orishaar, as a major trade partner with Aryvandaar, falls swiftly in a brutal surprise attack.−11,600 DR : The Ilythiiri destroy Syòrpiir by fire, separating them from their allied neighbors and burning their homes to the ground.−11,500 DR : Thearnytaar and Eiellûr band together and declare war on Ilythiir, decrying their use of fire and wanton destruction far more than the power plays of the northern elves. They fight a holding action, preventing the Ilythiiri from advancing north.Lolth sends the balor lord Wendonai to seduce a high Ilythiiri clan into her service, and the church of Lolth begins to rise in prominence.−11,450 DR : The Sable Wars. Thearnytaar and Eiellûr, with minimal allies from Keltormir and Shantel Othreier, invade Ilythiir, intent on destroying or reforming the dark elves before more realms fall. More than half their forces are decimated by the corrupt magics of the dark elves.−11,400 DR : Fall of Eiellûr as the Ilythiiri once again use fire to destroy their realm around them and isolate them from aid. They were also helped by traitor green elves, who thought their appeasement actions could help restore peace.
The Crown Wars see a sudden influx of elves entering Serôs, forcing the elves out into the sea and away from the coastal waters. This ignites the first major conflicts with merfolk and sahuagin. The betrayers of Eiellûr are rewarded by the Ilythiiri with a tract of jungle overlooking the River Talar, which will become known as the Misty Vale. The survivors become known as the Or'Tel'Quessir.−11,300 DR : Miyeritar conquered by Aryvandaar.−11,200 DR : Thearnytaar falls to the savage and now-unrepentant dark elves, who use enslaved monsters and undead to occupy the thorn-and-bramble choked woods. Ilythiir now directly skirmishes with the major realm of Keltormir along its eastern and southern expanses. With another major migration to Serôs following the fall of Thearnytaar, the sea elves expand militarily beyond the Selmal Basin and establish the kingdoms and regions of Coranthys, Tor Meraliir, Ullythan Reef and Ryeniir.−10,500 DR : The Dark Disaster. Miyeritar is engulfed in killing storms, which reduce this entire forest and realm into barren wastelands in three months. While no proof could ever be found, many believe the High Mages of A
−11,003 DR : Rise Of The Aryselmalyr Empire. Coryselmal, the grandest of the sea elf cities of Selmalyr, an elven nation of the Selmal Basin, becomes the capitol of the Aryselmalyr Empire over all the elf kingdoms in Serôs. The Aryselmalyr Calendar marks Year 1.ca. −11,000 DR : Dwarves from the great stronghold of Bhaerynden, under the leadership of Taark Shanat the Crusader and his eight sons, begin to establish the first holds of Deep Shanatar in the southern Underdark, below what will be the Lake of Steam and the Almraiven Mountains. These will eventually become known as shield dwarves.THE THIRD CROWN WAR : −10,900 DR to −10,500 DR−10,900 DR : The fallen solar Malkizid becomes the secret patron of the Vyshan lords. The Third Crown War. Accords finally fail between Shantel Othreier and Aryvandaar, now known as the Vyshaantar Empire, who immediately go to war.−10,800 DR : The Cloaker Wars. The followers of Shanat come under attack by the mysterious inhabitants of Rringlor Noroth, who rose from the depths of a great chasm in a battle for control of the caverns of Alatorin. The Stout Folk eventually prevail, after Taark slew four blue dragons who claimed the Rift of Dhalnadar as their demesne.Rise of Shanatar. The Wyrmskull Throne is formed, and Taark Shanat renames the wyrm's lair Brightaxe Hall and founds the kingdom of Alatorin. Shield dwarves mark the founding of Alatorin as the beginning of the First Great Age of Shanatar.−10,700 DR : The Battle Of The God's Theatre. The God's Theatre (modern day Tunlands) on eastern Shantel Othreier is the site of one of the largest and costliest of all the Crown Wars' battles. Nearly 70,000 elves died at the hands of elven or orcish enemies, as an orc horde 100,000 strong fell upon the already-embattled elves. Aryvandaar won the day, and occupied the northern half of Shantel Othreier.ca. −10,700 DR : The illithid city of Oryndoll is founded by refugees from Glyth.−10,600 DR : Shantel Othreier conquered by the Vyshaantar Empire of Aryvandaar after the mysterious death of Coronal Ynloeth. Guerrilla fighting and rebel mages arise in parts of Miyeritar and the newly conquered territories. Only Ardeep, a vassal realm of Shantel Othreier, does not fall to the Vyshaan.
The elven realm of Ardeep is finally conquered by Aryvandaar. In the hundred years it takes the Vyshaan to bring this land under their hegemony, they slay two of its rulers, Ilitharath and his grandson Tarosspur.Shock over the Dark Disaster established an uneasy four decades of peace, as nearly every elf of Faerûn shrank back in awe and horror from what havoc the Crown Wars wrought. The eight sons of Taark Shanat set off to found their own kingdoms in the caverns to the north (beneath modern-day Tethyr and Amn). Each son claimed one of the children of Moradin as his patron deity and so each of the subkingdoms they established became tightly linked with the church of that particular god or goddess.THE FOURTH CROWN WAR : −10,450 DR to −9,600 DRca. −10,450 DR : Start Of The Fourth Crown War. Ilythiir's seething counter-attack to avenge Miyeritar sees their open use of the corrupt powers of Lolth, Ghaunadaur and other dark, evil gods for the first time.−10,300 DR : The elves of Keltormir, opposed on both sides by the Vyshaan of Aryvandaar and the dark elven clan Hune of Ilythiir, strategically withdraw from eastern Keltormir, holding their lines at Highlands’ Edge.−10,270 DR : The Stone And Claw Campaigns. The withdrawal of Keltormir's forces to close and defend its own borders pitted forces of Aryvandaar and Ilythiir against each other. They soon closed ranks and fought incessantly for two centuries. Battles raged across the giant-infested mountains and wemic-claimed plains north of Keltormir.−10,110 DR : In opposition to the corrupt dark elves of Ilythiir and their continued destruction of the forested elven homelands by fire (an elven enemy of long-standing), over 1,000 priests and High Mages of Illefarn and other free areas spend decades in fervent prayer for salvation by Corellon Larethian and the Seldarine.−10,100 DR : Through enslaved dragons and other powers, the dark elves of Ilythiir engulf all of Shantel Othreier in flames, destroying over 70% of its trees over the course of 50 years.−10,000 DR : Descent Of The Drow. Corellon's magic, as directed through his priests and High Mages, transforms the dark elves, now only found in the form of the corrupt Ilythiiri, into the drow. Whether by magic or by weakness that banish them from the sunlit lands, all drow retreat within two months’ passing into the Underdark.Elves are summoned by the Seldarine to the site that becomes Elven Court one month after the Descent of the Drow, to settle differences and restore the peace among the elves.−9900 DR : Aryvandaar's covert persecution of High Mages and priests begins, as they attempt to destroy or control any who might somehow force their descent as they did the drow. While not destroyed utterly, Illefarn & its colony in the Llewyrrwood is annexed by Aryvandaar as its nobility of priests and High Mages died under the persecution of the increasingly-crazed Coronal Giilvas Vyshaan. Many elves of both lands flee to the remnants of Shantel Othreier.−9872 DR : Garrison towers built among the Sharkstooth Mountains, with the help of Vodos the Great Builder.−9845 DR : Construction begins on the Sharksbane Wall, uniting the existing tower garrisons, by the clergy of Deep Sashelas, Trishina and Eadro.−9839 DR : Start Of The First Serôs War. Wars and skirmishes continue across centuries to slow or stop the building of the Sharksbane Wall.−9800 DR : The Vyshantaar Empire’s forces occupy all elven realms (save Keltormir) from the High Forest of Aryvandaar to the sweltering southern forests of Ilythiir. They begin the colonisation and settlement of Evermeet.
A large force of Llewyrr elves escape the oppressive mainland and resettle in isolation and safety among the mountains of the Moonshae Islands. Their new land becomes Synnoria, after the elfqueen who led the Llewyrr to this island sanctuary.
The Yuirwood is settled by small numbers of Sy'Tel'Quessir in the aftermath of the Crown Wars.ca. −9600 DR : The rise of the first drow civilizations in the Underdark beneath southern Faerûn and their constant harassment of the Vyshantaar forces over the next five centuries help prevent Aryvandaar annexing Keltormir or any other lands.
Guallidurth, ancient city of the drow, is founded under the lands later known as Calimshan.THE FIFTH CROWN WAR : −9,200 DR to −9,000 DR
−9200 DR : The First Proclamation of Elven Court leads to the revolt of the nobles of Aryvandaar and the last Crown War begins. The Elven Court, the Seldarine priesthoods, and the long-hidden High Mages restore pockets of resistance and freedom across the entire Vyshantaar Empire, fragmenting the armies and nobles to limit their coordination.
The solar Malkizid abandons House Vyshaan and retreats to the lower planes.−9000 DR : The Fifth Crown War Ends. The Vyshaan are utterly defeated and Aryvandaar is dissolved. Much of the High Forest is abandoned for an age, leaving the forest open so the gods might restore its peace. The madness of the Vyshaan clan compelled even their most fervent followers to abandon them before all the elves lay dead at their hands. While the final fate of the Vyshaan elves is not recorded, most Tel'Quessir believe them dead and executed at the hands of Elven Court. Still, some rebellious elves across the centuries whisper tales of the four sons of Vyshaan who escaped to the west and to the stars to quietly marshal their strength and await such a time as they could return in glory to Faerûn.THE SEVEN CITADELS' WAR : −4,500 DR to −4,300 DR
The Seven Citadels' War was a series of skirmishes between Siluvanede and allies Eaerlann and Sharrven, three elven realms based around the High Forest in northwest Faerûn, fought between c. −4500 DR and c. −4300 DR. They were sometimes collectively referred to as the Sixth Crown War.
THE FOUNDING TIME : -9,000 DR to -3,000 DR
The Founding Time, or the Age of the Proud Peoples, was the period just after the end of the Crown Wars when the elves and the dwarves dominated Faerûn. During this time, the humanoid races began their expansionist efforts. Elves, dwarves, and the human tribes founded several realms such as Evereska, High Shanatar, and Imaskar. Several major conflicts occurred during this time, including the Spider Wars and the Era of Skyfire.THE AGE OF HUMANITY : -3,000 DR to 1358 DRca. −3000 DR : The burgeoning human clans of the northern Sword Coast band together under a single leader and found Illusk.−2954 DR : Ioulaum raises the first Netherese Enclave, Xinlenal.−2770 DR : King Connar IV of Ammarindar and his legion defeat the monsters invading the High Forest and defeat the red dragon Rithaerosurffel.−2758 DR : The Netherese form a magocracy consisting of the major arcanists of Netheril called the High Mages of Netheril.−2600 DR : The last of the Shanatar dwarves fall to the invading Coramshan Empire and seal off the last remaining surface entrance to Deep Shanatar.
